The Government of India is making every possible effort to ensure transparency in the financial transactions of the Indian economy.

The Income Tax Department of the Government of India has made it mandatory to link Aadhar Card with PAN Card, so that the Income Tax Department can know the actual income and tax filing details of the individuals.

If a person does not do so, the card will be deactivated under PAN card rules as per Rule 41 of Section 139AA of the IT Act, after which the person will not be able to use government services.

Let us now understand this entire process step by step;

Step 1: - Visit the website www.incometaxindia.gov.in

On the left side of the home page you will find important links.

Step 2:- Go to the e-filing website for PAN-Aadhaar Linkage and click on the given link (“Go to E-filing website for PAN-Aadhaar Linkage”).

On clicking you will see a pop-up message like this. Click on the link given below “continue to home page”

Step 3:- After clicking on “Continue to Homepage” the pop-up given below will appear where click on the link “Link Aadhaar”

Step 4:- After clicking on "Link Aadhaar" link, you will see a pop-up.

Here you need to click OK on the option “I agree to validate my Aadhaar details with UIDAI” and also fill the “Captcha Code”
Here, for the convenience of visually challenged people, the website provides the option of 'One Time Password' (OTP). That is, visually challenged people have been given the facility that instead of “captcha code” they can ask for OTP on the registered number of their Aadhaar card.

Here the site administrator will send a 'one time password' to your registered mobile number. Therefore, it is necessary to have your mobile number registered with Aadhaar.

After filling the required information asked here, you will have to click on “Link Aadhaar” after which you will have to fill the required details.

Step 5:- After clicking on the link "Aadhaar" you will get another pop up window in which you will be asked to fill information related to your PAN card number, your name (as per Aadhaar), date of birth, father's name, etc. Along with this, as per the picture given below, you will also have to accept the condition that you are sharing your Aadhaar details with UIDAI.

After filling these details, click on the link Aadhaar. Your Aadhaar will be linked within 2 to 5 working days.

Link Aadhaar and PAN card through SMS

You can also link Aadhaar and PAN card from your mobile.

For this, you will have to go to your text message and after writing UIDPAN, write your Aadhaar number and PAN number.

After this this message will have to be sent to 567678 or 56161.

This message will reach the Aadhaar authority, after which you will get a confirmation message.

Note:

1. Name, date of birth and gender will be as per your Aadhaar details. If there is any difference between the information given in your PAN and Aadhaar card, then your Aadhaar will not be linked to the PAN card.

2. If there is a difference in name etc. between Aadhaar and PAN card, you will have to get the details of your PAN card or Aadhaar card matched.

3. If the details of Aadhaar and PAN card match, then both (Aadhaar and PAN card) get linked within 2 to 5 days. However, according to UIDAI helpline, this work may take up to 10 days.

Some questions and answers asked regarding linking PAN card with Aadhar card are as follows.

Question 1:- I have enrolled for Aadhaar number but I have not received the Aadhaar number yet, can I still file my income tax return?

Answer : Yes, you can file your income tax return by quoting the EID (enrolment ID) number mentioned on the EID slip provided by the enrollment center of the Aadhaar authority.

Question 2:- If I do not link my PAN card with Aadhaar, will my PAN card be blocked?

Answer: There is no such rule till now. The purposes of both PAN and Aadhaar cards are different. For PAN related queries, you are requested to please contact the Income Tax Department.

Question 3:- I do not have any proof of date of birth. How to update date of birth in Aadhaar and PAN card so that I can link my Aadhaar and PAN card?

Answer: If a resident provides documentary proof of date of birth (DOB) at the time of Aadhaar generation, his/her date of birth is considered “verified”. But when the person does not provide any document of his date of birth, then his date of birth is considered "declared" which is not considered authentic. The date of birth mentioned in the Class 10 certificate is considered as the "verified" date of birth.

Question 4:- My date of birth in PAN card and Aadhar card does not match and I am not able to link them; Please help?

Answer: You will have to get your date of birth corrected to link both PAN card and Aadhar card. Correction can be made in either PAN card or Aadhar card but the date of birth should be the same in both.

Question 5:- My name is different in PAN card and Aadhar card, hence I am not able to inter-link PAN card and Aadhar card. Tell me the solution?

Answer: To link PAN card and Aadhar card, your demographic details (like name, date of birth and gender) should be same in both the documents.

But if there is a slight difference in the name in both the documents (like someone's name is written in short form in PAN card and full name is written in Aadhaar card), then in such a case, an OTP will be sent to the number registered in your Aadhaar.

In this case, Aadhaar can be linked with PAN but your date of birth and gender should be same in both the documents.

But if there is a lot of difference in the name in both the documents, then you will have to change your name in either Aadhaar or PAN card, only then both will be linked.
