Investments In Equity Funds Reduces To Half In May, Large Caps See Biggest Outflow: AMFI

The mutual fund industry mobilised around Rs 8.58 lakh crore in May 2023, up from Rs 8.25 lakh crore in the previous month, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) show.

The net asset under management (AUM) of mutual funds was Rs 43.20 lakh crore in May, while the average AUM was Rs 42.94 crore.

Also, in May, the total number mutual fund folios reached an all-time high of 14,73,75,502, of which the retail AUM stood at around Rs 21,76,840 crore.

Likewise, the number of retail scheme folios, equity, hybrid, and solution oriented schemes, were 11,76,37,747.

Commenting on the latest mutual fund data, N.S. Venkates, the CEO of AMFI, said: “Mutual funds have shown an uptick even in the midst of volatile markets. The industry net AUM stands at Rs 43.20 lakh crore as on May 31, 2023. Investors are choosing to invest in categories where they find value.

“This month, we observed the highest AUM through systematic investment plans (SIP), with highest ever SIP contribution of Rs 14,748.68 crore and a surge in new SIP registrations. These figures indicate that retail investors have maintained their confidence in SIP as their preferred investment instrument for wealth creation.”

Industry Figures In A Nutshell

The industry saw the launch of five new schemes, all in the open-ended category, raising a total of Rs 483 crore.

In addition, SIP contribution stood at all time high of Rs 14,748.68 crore. The SIP accounts totalled 6,52,84,902 in May, highest ever, compared to 6,42,34,057 in the previous month, the AMFI data show.

The inflow into equities was Rs 3,240.30 crore in May compared to Rs 6,480.29 crore in April, while large caps saw the biggest outflow in May, at Rs 1,362 crore.

Furthermore, the SIP AUM stood at Rs 7,52,943.79 crore in May, compared to Rs 7,17,175.88 crore in April. Also, the number of new SIPs registered in May 2023 were 24,69,866.

The number of folios in income and debt-oriented schemes were 71,92,537, growth and equity-oriented schemes 9,94,76,926, hybrid schemes 1,21,46,180, solution oriented schemes 56,99,044, and other plans 2,23,89,205. In close ended schemes, there were a total of 4,68,819 folios, and interval schemes, 2,791 folios.

The new schemes launched in May include Quant Business Cycle Fund, WhiteOak Capital Multi Asset Allocation Fund, SBI S&P BSE Sensex Index Fund, UTI Nifty 500 Value 50 Index Fund, and Kotak FMP Series 311 (Fixed Term Plan).
