Zomato has unveiled a crowd-supported weather infrastructure named weatherunion.com. As per the company, this is the largest private infrastructure of its kind in India, with a proprietary network of more than 650 on-ground weather stations.

Taking to X, Deepinder Goyal, CEO, Zomato, said, “These weather stations, developed by Zomato, provide localized, real-time information on key weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, rainfall, etc.” As of now, these stations are available across 45 large cities. The food delivery platform said that they are expanding this to other Indian cities very soon.

While signifying the importance of this rich data and its potential to unlock weather use cases for research institutes and enterprises, Goyal said that they expect more institutions and companies to collaborate with them. As of now, CAS-IIT Delhi has already collaborated with them.

Goyal added, “At Zomato, it was crucial for us to have access to precise and real-time weather information to make the right business decisions to serve our customers better. Hence, we took it upon ourselves to develop a solution capable of empowering us on this front.”

The company says that they believe data should be shared, and hence, the company has decided to open access to this data for public goods. To boost their productivity, Goyal added that multiple companies and public institutions should use this real-time weather data.

Goyal ended the note with a call for volunteers. He said, “Also, a lot of Zomato employees have hosted weather stations at their homes. As we look forward to further expanding this infrastructure, we welcome volunteers who want to provide us space on their premises to install these weather stations and contribute to nation-building.”
