Uber Gets Government Approval to Run Buses in Delhi

Ride hailing platform Uber has received approval from the Delhi Transport Department to run premium bus services in the city. Commuters can book their bus rides through the Uber app.

In addition to hyperlocal deliveries, Uber currently provides ride-hailing services for four-wheelers, autorickshaws, and two-wheeler taxis. Uber competes with Ola Cabs and Rapido, among others.

In October 2023, a premium bus service scheme was approved by the Delhi government with the intent to reduce pollution and encourage the use of public transport. The ride-hailing app has been granted a license under this scheme. Along with features like WiFi, GPS, CCTV, panic buttons, and reclining seats, the buses will also include air conditioning.

The scheme requires that a platform ensure the safety of female passengers and have a quick response system. This includes a panic button on their mobile and web apps that must work 24/7 and integrate with law enforcement via APIs to address complaints promptly.

Under an MoU with the West Bengal government, Uber Shuttle is currently working in West Bengal. A pilot program for Uber Shuttle is also being run in Delhi, as per a report by the Economic Times.

Amit Deshpande, head of Uber Shuttle India, said, “We are committed to building a business that serves the mobility needs of every Indian; buses are an important addition to our available products. After a successful pilot where we’ve seen a strong demand for buses, we are excited to formally bring the magic of Uber rides to buses in Delhi.”

Along with Uber, ride-hailing platform Aaveg also received the approval of the Delhi Transport Department to run premium bus services. Aaveg is an app-based shuttle service that operates in Delhi, Gurugram, and Noida.

The buses will be operated by local fleet partners, and they will have a seating capacity of around 19 to 50 people. Uber aims to connect residential areas and business districts in all parts of Delhi through its shuttle service.
