OpenAI Co-Founder Ilya Sutskever Announces Departure from the ChatGPT maker

Jakub Pachocki will now work as the Chief Scientist of OpenAI. Before this, he was the Director of Research, leading the development of GPT-4 and OpenAI Five.

OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever has announced her departure from the maker of ChatGPT. 

Taking to social media platform X, Sutskever said, “After almost a decade, I have made the decision to leave OpenAI.” While highlighting that the company’s move has been nothing but miraculous, Sutskever expressed confidently that OpenAI will build AGI that is both safe and beneficial under the current leadership. 

“It was an honor and a privilege to have worked together, and I will miss everyone dearly. So long, and thanks for everything,” said Sutskever. While Sutskever hasn’t mentioned in detail the next course of action, he said that he will disclose details about his project soon.

Before this, he was the Director of Research, leading the development of GPT-4 and OpenAI Five and conducting basic research in deep learning optimization and large-scale reinforcement learning. 

Talking about Sutskever’s departure, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “Ilya and OpenAI are going to part ways. This is very sad to me; Ilya is easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field, and a dear friend.” 

Sutskever was on the board that removed Altman

Sutskever and three other board members removed the company's well-known CEO, Sam Altman, in November. He eventually expressed regret for the decision and announced his departure from the San Francisco AI business. 

“I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together, and I will do everything I can to reunite the company," Sutskever wrote on the social media network X on November 20. 

Meanwhile, OpenAI was recently in the news for releasing its new GPT-4o AI model. Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI, stated that GPT-4o has capabilities spanning voice, text, and vision, leading to remarkable efficiencies. Additionally, these efficiencies enable them to extend GPT-4o intelligence to their free users, a goal they have been diligently pursuing for several months.
