What recourse do dependants of the policyholder have if the death claim is rejected?

Ram Sinha, Lucknow

It is unfortunate that the death claim has been rejected by the insurer. Normally, a rejection is accompanied with a letter stating the grounds of rejection of the claim—take a look at it to understand why the claim was rejected in the first place. Based on this detail, if you feel that the ground on which the claim was rejected is wrong, you can make a representation to the insurer for reconsideration. However, if you do not get any proper response, you can file a complaint with the insurance ombudsman. Please bear in mind that there is a limitation period of one year for filing the complaint. Your application must reach the office of ombudsman within a year of the date on which the insurance company rejected the claim or sent the final reply to the representation made after rejection.
