My father turned 60 last month and is diabetic; I want to buy health insurance for him. Please suggest a policy that will suit his needs.

Diabetes is considered to be a pre-existing disease for which you can consider Star Health Senior Citizen Red Carpet policy. When taking this policy, pre-insurance medical tests are not required and all pre-existing diseases are covered from the first year, except those for which treatment or advice was recommended during the immediately preceding 12 months from the date of proposal. Remember, this is a co-payment policy in which the insured has to bear 30 per cent of all admissible claims and 50 per cent of the co-payment is applicable for pre-existing diseases. There are other policies targeted at senior citizens available with other insurers as well; but the sum insured for hospitalisation under such plans is fixed and restrictive. Do check on individual plans from a few insurers before deciding on which one to take.
